While Dave is recovering from his brutal treatment, The Guard are sent westward to help repair the scent border. Along the way they travel along a valley and are caught up in a flash flood. Climbing a nearby tree, Dalia and Maximus find an Owl nest that has been abandoned for some time and has fallen in between some lower branches. Within the nest they find leaves and sticks that they attempt to craft into a raft but haven't the knowledge to do so and are caught up in the current, which sweeps them away. The mice are forced to swim and tire quickly, Maximus crashes into a protruding rock and hurts his leg. At the mercy of the current they are washed ashore and clamber to the peak of a nearby riverbank where they hear a strange voice shouting at them. As they venture over the peak they see a strange looking animal they're not familiar with, furry with small eyes and a big nose. Another strange looking creature reveals itself, shouting at the other. This one turns to the mice and apologises for his friends rude behaviour, revealing to The Guard that he can speak mouse! He invites them inside where they can rest, heal and have a good meal.
Mole name? Mayor.
They find out that the moles have been burrowing underground networks for quite some time and they can see they are expers miners and stonemasons.
The mice ask if there's any way the mole people can help deliver a message back to Gwendolyn. They ask that a messenger mole is sent with a message. Mole mayor agrees that it would be useful to trade with the mice of Lockhaven but admits to being a little hesitant after their last alliance with the mice of (wherever Dave was delivering the plans of lockhaven to) turned sour. It looks like the mice will have to prove themselves to mole mayor if they are to receive any help in the future.
